Observing the sun with a Herschel Wedge

The view of the sun is always fascinting whether viewing in H alpha or just in white light.

There are a variety of solar filters out there which are used over the telescope objective, the alternative is that of Herschel wedge which by use of a mirror to reflect 95% of the light out of the path to the eye, and using a combination of neutral density or polarising filters to reduce the incoming light to a safe level.

The beauty of this system is the incredible quality of image. This, in my humble opinion gives the best view of the sun capable in white light.

The wedges are available in both 2" and 1.25" versions.

Observing the sun without correct filtration is dangerous

You will blind yourself - and you think reading this is bad

If in doubt - dont!! - it isn't worth it
